The theory that says that Christians will be “raptured” before the Great Tribulation is a relatively recent doctrine that originated in the 19th century. There are different views on who started the rapture theory, but some of the possible sources are:
Francisco Ribera, a Jesuit priest who wrote an apocalyptic commentary in 1585 that proposed a future Antichrist and a secret rapture of the saints1.
John Nelson Darby, a theologian who popularized the idea of a secret, pre-tribulation rapture based on a vision of a young Scottish girl named Margaret Macdon.
As I understand scripture, Jesus told a parable about the Weeds and the Wheat. If there is a "rapture", it would be the reaping and burning of weeds (i.e. the enemies of Christ).
I guess we will learn who's right in the next few months.
